The Beginning of Our Journey
In 2015, I witnessed something that changed my life forever. A injured street dog, lying helpless on the roadside, surrounded by indifferent passersby. In that moment, I realized that Chhattisgarh—my home—had no dedicated facility to help animals in distress.
What started as a small effort to rescue and treat a few animals has grown into Vatika Animal Sanctuary—a beacon of hope for thousands of voiceless beings across the state. We didn't have funding, we didn't have infrastructure, but we had something more powerful: compassion and determination.
Our Journey: From Dream to Reality
The First Rescue
We started with a small rented space and basic medical supplies. Our first patient was a dog with a fractured leg. Today, that dog still lives with us—a constant reminder of why we began this journey.
Building Our Sanctuary
With the support of kind donors and volunteers, we acquired land in Chandkhuri Village. What was once barren ground is now home to hundreds of animals who have nowhere else to go.
First Surgical Facility
We opened Chhattisgarh's first dedicated animal surgical facility. From performing 30-50 surgeries a month in a makeshift room, we now conduct over 300 life-saving surgeries monthly.
Rabies Surveillance Program
We launched our One Health Mission to combat rabies—a 100% preventable disease that still claims lives in our state. Through rescue, isolation, testing, and community education, we're working towards zero rabies transmission.
Expansion & Impact
Today, we rescue 1,500+ animals annually, run ambulance services, conduct ABC programs, educate 20,000+ students yearly, and provide employment to a dedicated team. But our work is far from over.
The Challenges We Face
Chhattisgarh is a neglected state when it comes to animal welfare. We have non-functional SPCAs, no government funding for animal rescue, and limited awareness about animal rights. Vatika fills this critical gap—but we cannot do it alone.
Everyday we receive 200+ calls in the helpline. Everyday we rescue and help the most critical cases but due to lack of space, resources, or funds some animals are left behind. Seeing the large volume of animal casualties, everyday we make impossible choices about who to save today. This breaks my heart, but it also fuels my determination.
Our Vision for the Future
I envision a Chhattisgarh where:
- Every animal in distress receives immediate medical attention and care
- Street animals are sterilized humanely through ABC programs, reducing overpopulation and suffering
- Children grow up learning compassion and respect for all living beings
- Rabies is eradicated through vaccination, surveillance, and education
- No animal suffers from preventable diseases, injuries, or cruelty
This vision may seem ambitious, but I've learned that miracles happen when compassionate people come together. Every donor, volunteer, and supporter is part of this miracle.
